Annual Infection Prevention and Control Statement

Purpose

We are committed to providing a clean, safe, and hygienic environment for all our patients, staff, and visitors. Infection prevention and control (IPC) is a key priority within our practice, and we follow national guidance to minimise the risk of infection.

Our arrangements comply with:

  • The Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Code of Practice on IPC)
  • UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) guidance
  • NHS best practice standards

Leadership

We have a designated Infection Prevention and Control Lead, Jo Hawken who oversees all IPC activities along with the Practice Manager, Alex Austin, within the practice, supported by the wider clinical and management team.

What We Do

We maintain high standards through:

  • Regular cleaning of all clinical and non-clinical areas
  • Hand hygiene facilities for patients and staff throughout the building
  • Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Safe management of clinical waste and sharps
  • Decontamination of equipment in line with guidance

We also promote good hygiene practices, including respiratory etiquette and handwashing, through signage and patient information.

Staff Training

All staff receive regular IPC training and updates to ensure they are aware of current best practice.

Managing Infection Risks

We have procedures in place to:

  • Safely manage patients with suspected infections
  • Respond to outbreaks or incidents
  • Protect vulnerable patients and staff

Antimicrobial Stewardship

We support the appropriate use of antibiotics and follow prescribing guidance to help prevent antimicrobial resistance.

 IPC Audit and Assurance

We regularly review our infection control arrangements through a programme of audits and inspections. These include:

    • Hand hygiene audits
    • Cleaning and environment audits
    • Waste management checks
    • PPE compliance reviews
